Pauline Curley rolled back the years when she clocked a new course record time of 2:47.47 to finish first woman at the Cork City Marathon. Leading home the 1,200 finishers was Bartosz Mazerski of Lks Zantyr Sztum in Poland with a time of 2:28.29. Just 23 seconds behind was Gary O’Hanlon of Clonliffe Harriers running his fifth marathon of the year – he started with a win in Connemara last March and continued his winning streak in Limerick, Kildare, and then Newry only last weekend. Finishing her 110th (and final) marathon in 5:42.23 was 76-year-0ld Kay O’Regan of Slaney Olympic. Kay will now concentrate on the shorter distances.
* Freddie Kearon Sittuk and Lizzie Lee won the Cork half marathon.
* Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane, a faithful supporter of the Women’s Mini Marathon for many years and runner -up in both 2010 and 2011, finally nailed down a well-earned victory today. O’Doherty made her break with 3km to go and her finishing time on a blazing hot day was an impressive 34 mins 20 secs. In second place was Raheny’s Fiona Roche in 34 mins 45 secs, while third was Maria McCambridge in 35.00. McCambridge had run both the 5000m and 3000m for her club DSD at the European Clubs Track and Field Championships last weekend and ran out of stream as the race progressed. If there had been a team category based on the top three finishers (and why isn’t there?), Raheny, with three in the top seven, would have made it just ahead of Dundrum South Dublin.
