Derry Hat Trick for Hughes – after 28 years!

Tommy Hughes, aged 52, made it a hat trick of Derry marathons after a mere 28 years when he won the Walled City Marathon.

Hughes won the last marathon held in the city  in 1984 and repated that victory at the Foyle Marathon a year later.

His time of 2:30:32 put him almost  five minutes ahead of Greg Roberts of City of Derry, who finished  in 2:35:24. Letterkenny’s Pauric McKinney was third in 2:38:15.

Jackie Boyle from Tallaght, a Derry native,  was first woman in 3:14:15 with Foyle Valley’s Martina McMullan second in 3:21:57 and Springwell’s Orla McGuinness third in 3:22:25.

A hotly-contested wheelchair race saw Paul Hannon and Jim Corbett crossing the line in 2:41:48 with Karol Doherty just a second behind in 2:41:49.
