Masters: First titles for McGlynn, McKinney; record 10th for Parnell. Results added.

IMG_9606Anne Marie McGlynn made a sparkling masters’ debut when she ran away with the women’s 6km at the British and Irish Masters Cross-Country International in Santry today (Sat).

With her Letterkenny club-mates Natasha Adams and Fionnuala Diver second and fourth, McGlynn was also leading the Irish W35 team to a resounding victory. Second overall and first W40 was Claire Martin of England.

McGlynn will return to Santry next weekend to run in the National Interclubs, where places on the Irish team are at stake. Last year, she captained the Irish team to the bronze medals at the European Championships. “My target is a place on the Irish senior team and this was perfect preparation,” she said.

In the older age groups, Carmel Parnell of Leevale was winning a record-breaking tenth title in her first year over 60. She had started conservatively and had no idea she had won until well after the race was over. “The visibility wasn’t great today and when you move into a new age group, you’re not sure of who you’re racing against,” she said. The W60 team finished second.

On a great day for the Irish, Pauric McKinney of Inishowen won the M50 race after sprinting past four-time M45 champion IMG_9648Austin Davies of Wales, who had led for most of the race. Second of the Irish was Damien Martin from Raheny. Sidelined by illness was Mick Traynor, who did a tremendous job as team captain. Former M50 champion Tommy Payne of Tinryland won the M55 category, while world 1500m indoor record-holder Brian Lynch of NER won the M60 class; the Irish made a clean sweep of the placings to win the team title.

Other good results came from Martin McEvilly of Galway City Harriers who was first M65 and helped the team to victory and the winning W45 trio of Jackie Carthy from Kilmore 1st, Raheny’s Annette Kealy 2nd and Carmel Crowley of Bandon 3rd. In the M45 category Peter Matthews of DSD finished third. Maria McCarthy of Farranfore MV was fourth W40. Winning Irish teams were the  over 35, 45 and 65 women and the  over 35, 40, 55, 60 and 65 men.

Winner of the men’s M35-49 8km was England’s Christopher Greenwood who was retaining the title he won last year in some style.  A good runs from Derry’s Declan Reed saw him finish second overall and second M40; Michael Harty of East Cork was  third overall  and first M35.
