Leinster Schools: Sprint Double for Lawlor

Sean Lawlor of Kylemore College ended his Leinster schools athletics career in style when he won both the senior 100m and 200m at the second day of the Glo Health Leinster Schools Track and Field Championships in sun-soaked Santry.IMG_2652

In the 100m, Lawlor beat old rival Eoin Doherty of Drimnagh Castle to win in 10.83 secs. His time in the 200m was 21.86 secs.

Winning the senior girls’ 100m in 12.08 secs was Sophie Becker of St Mary’s New Ross. Aoife Lynch of LCC was second and later went on to win the 200m. Becker opted for the 400m rather than the 200m where she finished a close second behind Molly O’Reilly of Loreto Dalkey, who recorded a personal best time of 56.19 secs for victory.

Winning a closely fought inter girls 300m was Katie McGee of Teresians, who edged out the 200m champion Chloe Ni h Eidean of GC Carlow, Emma Cheshire of St Vincent’s Dundalk and Ellie O’Toole of C&P Kilcullen, all of them under 42 seconds.

An easy winner of the senior girls’ 1500m was Nadia Power of St MacDara’s whose current target is the World Junior qualifying mark of 4 mins 28 secs. Her time was a useful 4:36.50 and she’s aiming to run faster at the BMC meet in Watford next week.

IMG_2643Two middle distance thrillers at inter level proved the races of the day. In the girls’ 1500m, Laura Ward of Pres Carlow had a lead of about 20 metres at the bell, but was hunted down by Roseanne McCullough of the High School Rathgar who passed her for victory within inches of the line.

Equally dramatic was the boys’ 3000m, where Paddy Maher of Dunshaughlin CC came through to beat Cian Kelly of Knockbeg College, who was the pre-race favourite. Winning the senior boys 1500m was Kevin McGrath of St Pat’s Navan in 3:58.76, while taking the senior 5000m title was Jack O’Leary from Clongowes in 15:28.55.

The only track record of the day came in the inter girls’ 3,000m, with Amy Rose Farrell of Mount Anville, Abbie Taylor from St Gerard’s and Jodie McCann of Institute of Education all going under the previous record of 10:15.26.

A clear winner of the inter girls’ 800m in 2:16.49 was Mollie Brown of Castleknock CC.

Four field records were broken. In the inter high jump, Ryan Carty Walsh of Good Counsel soared over 2.05m adding one centimetre to the old record. Lauren O’Keeffe of Loreto Balbriggan won the inter girls’ hammer with a heave of 56.34, improving her own record from last year. There were also records in both the senior and inter girls’ pole vault with Sarah Derham winning the senior title with a vault of 3.05m and Lara O’Byrne of St Joseph’s Lucan best of the inter girls with 2.80m.

In the throws, Darragh Caffrey of St Finian’s made the World Juniors B qualifying mark when he threw 54.58m to win the inter boys’ title. Comfortably over the girls’ B standard with a winning throw of 43.40m in senior girls was Niamh Fogarty of St Joseph’s Rush. Winning the senior boys’  long jump was Keith Marks of Ashbourne CC with a best of 7.36m, which was an unofficial championships best (no wind gauge) ; Marks also won the high jump with 1.90m.
