Sarah Mulligan of DSD has become the first Irish woman to win the prestigious Snowdon International Mountain Race in Llanberis, north Wales. This is the best result by an Irish mountain runner since John Lenihan won the world title; indeed Lenihan is the only previous Irish winner at Snowdon, although Robin Bryson does hold the record for the fastest time to the top.
Mulligan, who was third last year, was a woman on a mission on the super-tough ten mile race – she took 54 mins 38 to negotiate the five miles to the summit and 31 mins 48 secs for the downhill return trip; total time 86 mins 26 secs. Mulligan was well supported by Emma Donlon and Catherine Devitt, with the team finishing second. On a great day for the Irish team, Brian McMahon was third in the new-look uphill only race.
* Stephen Scullion and Maria McCambridge were the first home at the Airtricity Fingal 10km, Race 2 of the Dublin Race Series, held in Swords. McCambridge ran 33 mins 30 – an encouraging return to form before next month’s World Championships where she runs the marathon. In Cork, Sergiu Ciobanu and Claire McCarthy were the winners at the Fit Magazine 10km.
*On the final day of competition at the European Juniors in Rieti, Ferrybank 400m hurdler Ben Kiely finished 6th in 51.98, Sarah Collins of Finn Valley was 7th in the women’s 5000m in 16:33.54, while the men’s 4x100m team(Pike, Power, Elliott. Lawler) narrowly failed to make the finish when they finished 4th in their semi-final in 40.60 – a new national junior record.
A day earlier, Emerald’s Sarah Lavin had finished second in the 100m hurdles at the European Junior Championships in Rieti and improved on her own national junior record with a time of 13.34 seconds, improving on the 13.36 set in Cork she ran in Cork earlier this month.
There were a number of fourth places for the Irish team: Marcus Lawler of St Laurence O’Toole in the 20om,
Sean Tobin of Clonmel in the 1500m, and Newry’s Aislinn Crossey in the 800m, where she ran a personal best time of 2.03.93, nearly three seconds faster than her previous best. Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of DSD was well off her best and finished eighth.
Letterkenny’s Ruairi Finnegan also finished very close to the medals in 7th in 3.46.80, less than three seconds behind the winner Jake Whiteman of Scotland.
* At the final day of the Woodie’s DIY Juvenile Track and Field Championships in Tullamore, Nadia Power of Templeogue, fresh from the European Youth Olympics, was a comfortable winner of the W16 1500m.
In the M18 high jump, David Cussen of Middle Abbey soared over a record-breaking height of 2.10, narrowly failing at 2.14. There was also a record of 2.08 in the M19 high jump for Jamie Murtagh of St Andrew’s. Discus thrower Jack Hallahan of Midleton added over 10 metres to the old record when he won the M14 event with a best of 49.02. In the W13 long jump Sophie Meridith of St Mary’s Limerick jumped 5.15m to break the old record of 4.92min her very first jump and went on to jump 5.25m. Some pics at www.lindie.zenfolio.com
* Eoin Keith has won the Energia 24-Hour Irish Championships at the Mary Peters Track, Belfast with a total of 152.03 miles. This adds four miles to his own 2008 record. Second and first woman in another new Irish record was Ruthann Sheehan with 150.12 miles, while third was John O’Regan, winner for the past two years, with 137.35 miles. Along the way, Keith also set a new Irish 100-mile record of 15 hrs 20 mins.
* A brilliantly consistent English team dominated the Aviva SIAB Schools International in Santry. Their supporters, who packed the main stand, cheered every team member to the rafters – an impressive vocal display!
Helping the Irish team to a fighting second were winners Andrew Barkley discus, Sam Healy long jump, Adam King hammer, Maria Carey triple jump, and Sinead Burke walk. Placing second were Aaron Egan in the boys’ walk, Shannen Dawkins high jump (with a PB 1.72), Jason Foley 100m hurdles while among the third placers were Zak Irwin in both 100m and 200m,Alanna Lally 800m, Jack Reid 800m, Darren Prout triple jump.
