Ian Conroy Takes World M35 Mountain Running Title. Mageean runs 4:01.46

Raheny’s Ian Conroy has won the world  over 35 mountain running title in Susa, Italy.

Conroy ran a superb race  on the uphill only 11.5km course to finish third overall behind Cesar Costa of Portugal, overall winner and first M40, and the legendary Jonathan Wyatt of New Zealand. The many times former world champion wore bib No 1, and finished second over all and  second M40.  Conroy’s time of 69 mins 20 secs meant he finished 28 seconds behind the winner and just five seconds behind Wyatt. Not far behind was Rathfarnham’s Mark Ryan, a previous winner of the title, in 9th place overall and sixth M35, while his Rathfworld-master-mountain-running-championshiparnham team mate Brian Furey was 27th overall and 12th M35. It meant the Irish took an historic team gold, beating host nation Italy by a single point – Team Ireland, world M35 champions!

In  yesterday’s women’s race over 6.5km, Shileen O’Kane of Lagan Valley  finished 17th overall and sixth W35 in 53 mins 7 secs, with Jackie Carty Stamp of Kilmore seventh W45 in 53 mins 51 secs and Becky Quinn 5th W40 in 54 mins 14 secs.Quinn, Donna Mahon and Aisling  Kirwan took team silver by a single point behind Italy; a dominant GB team took the first three places.  The Irish W45 women also took team silver behind Italy, with no other teams entered. In the older age groups, also run off yesterday, Ger Maloney of St Paul’s finished fifth and Ballyroan’s Martin McDonald sixth in the M55 age group and with Eugene McCann of Newcastle took team bronze. A large Irish group had travelled.

CIARA MAGEEAN continued her excellent season by clocking a new personal best time of 4:01.46 for 1500m at the Paris Diamond League. Mageean’s time rockets her into second place on the Irish all-time list behind Sonia O’Sullivan, who ran 3:58.85 in Monaco 21 years ago.

JUST A DAY after winning the Tullamore Half Marathon Pauline Curley came home seventh overall and first woman at the Longford Marathon.  She even managed to break three hours,  finishing in 2 hrs 56 mins 13 secs. Fourth woman and first W60 was Waterford’s Mary Jennings. Winning the race was Clonliffe master Gary O’Hanlon in 2:28.49. Second, in 2:42.04, was Raheny’s Freddy Sittuk, who had won the Warriors’ Run in Sligo a day earlier.
