Clonliffe’s Brian Gregan ran a time of 45.55 secs to finish 4th in top-class 400m in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Despite running from the seventh lane on a particularly cold night, Gregan’s time was just two-hundreds of a second off the personal best 45.53 he ran two weeks ago in Spain.
* At the Dublin Graded League in Tallaght, Kieran Elliott of North Sligo was fastest in the men’s 200m (seven races) running 22.43 in the championships race, with DSD’s Mark Kavanagh (Race 2) clocking 22.69 and Keith Doherty (Race 1) of Tallaght 22.94. Emmett Dunleavy of Sligo won the championships 1500m in 3:54.91, followed by Eric Keogh of Donore and Kilkenny’s Brian Maher.
In the men’s 400m hurdles, Ben Kiely of Ferrybank clocked 53.43, which is a European Junior B standard run – his second. In the field Rory Gunning of Fr Murphy’s threw 52.72 in the javelin.
Of the women, Claire Mooney from Naas won the championships 200m in 26 secs, followed closely by Victoria Dwyer of Raheny. UCD’s Ellie Hartnett took the 1500m title in 4:36.39, ahead of Caroline Crowley from Crusaders and Raheny’s Iseult O’Donnell. Full results at www.dublinathletics.com
* Cillian O’Leary and Mary Finn were the winners of the BHAA Dublin Prison Service 5km trail race in the Phoenix Park. Bank of Ireland was best of the teams with three inside the first 22.
* Dunshaughlin’s Robbie Matthews and Mullingar juvenile Susan Glennon were the winners of the Fore GAA 5km
* Sean McGrath of East Cork beat former Olympian Noel Berkeley to win the Shangarry ‘5’ – the second race in the annual Ballycotton 5-Mile Summer Series. American visitor Linda Huyck was first woman. As John Desmond points out in his excellent Cork Running blog, this race is run entirely by volunteers and is hand timed so that the organisers can keep the entry fee at just €5 (chip timing would add €2.50). Yet, despite a record entry of 598, a full set of results was completed by 3am in the early hours of Friday morning.
