Matthews, McCambridge Tops at Irish Runner ‘5’; Pollock Wins Ards ‘Half’

Maria McCambridge of DSD and the Marathon Mission put her third place in the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon well behind her when she  won the Irish RunneLIN_0303r 5-Mile in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.

McCambridge’s time of 26 mins 45 secs was not particularly fast but she still won the race comfortably ahead of Siobhan O’Doherty   of Borrisokane and Raheny’s Fiona Roche, the pair who had  finished first and second at the women’s mini marathon ahead of her. McCambridge will represent Ireland in the marathon at the World Athletics Championships in August.

Leading home close to 3,000 finishers in 24 mins 58 secs  was Robbie Matthews of Dunshaughlin.  Comeback kid Colm Rooney of Clonliffe was a fighting second with Mark Hoey from Star of the Sea third. Numbers were down by over 1,200 on last – possibly something to do with the number of races taking place over the week (another one at the very same venue a day later). On the plus side, this meant a far better atmosphere and less crowding.

Special mention for two evergreen warriors of Irish athletics  – last Tuesday, MSB’s Tadgh Twomey and John Fitzsimons of Crusaders finished first and second over 75 at the BHAA IPS Trail 5km, also in the Phoenix Park. Back at the same venue, but on the roads this time, they managed the same feat.  Long may they flourish!

* Gary O’Hanlon was in Waterford at the Viking Marathon, his sixth this year. Pauline Curley was fourth overall and first woman. One small problem: due to completely unexpected road works that surfaced on the morning of the race, the first mile was 400m longer that it should have been; a few people missed out on PBs because of this. Every race organiser’s nightmare! Between the marathon, half marathon and relay, close to 1,900 were in action.

* At the St Coca’s 5km in Kilcock on Friday evening, Mark Christie of Mullingar was a clear winner in 14 mins 13 secs – his second win in as many weeks after a long break from racing. Orla Drumm of Crusaders was first woman in 16 mins 49 secs. That same night, at the Ards Half Marathon, Paul Pollock of Annadale came home first in 67 mins 46 mins, beating our Kenyan visitor Freddy Keron Sittok by a minute. Like Maria McCambridge, Pollock is preparing for the marathon at the World Championships in August. Julie Balmer was first woman.
