Trim’s Harry Purcell won his 800m heat at the European Juniors in Sweden, but will have to beware of the man who finished half a pace behind him in tomorrow’s semi-finals. The Russian Konstantin Tolokonnikov has a personal best of 1:46.42 and took silver at last year’s World Youth Championships. Just behind them were Jonas Schopfer of Switzerland and Tony van Diepan of the Netherlands who all qualified for the three semi-finals.
In the opening heat, Cillian Kirwan of Raheny finished fifth with his time of 1:53.76 enough to win him a fastest loser place in the semi-finals.
Finishing fifth with a personal best 7.44m in the long jump final was Leevale’s Sam Healy.
At the World Youth Championships in Cali Colombia, Elizabeth Morland of Cushinstown made the best possible start to her heptathlon campaign with a personal best of 13.62 secs in the 100m hurdles, the third fastest time of the day. She then jumped 1.67 m for 818 points in the high jump, did 11.84m in the shot and finished well with a personal best the in the 200m of 24.84m. With today’s long jump, hammer and 800m to come, he is lying 8th on the points table with a 34.04 total; leader is Adriana Rodriguez of Cuba on 3678 pts. In the hammer, Michaela Walsh qualified for the final with a throw of 61.71. Cali is six hours behind us.
