Euro Juniors: Mulcaire 4th in 5000m

IMG_5080Kevin Mulcaire from Ennis finished just out of the medals in the men’s 5000m at the at the European Junior Track and Field Championships in Eskilstuna, Sweden.

Mulcaire finished a gutsy fourth in 14 mins 39.14 secs – less than four seconds off third place in a tactical race that only came alive in the last two laps. With longtime leader Yemanaberhan Crippa of Italy fading, Alex George of Great Britain came off the final bend  at speed and lead the charge for the line, He finished in 14 mins 34.42 secs, with Simon Debognies of Belgium second ahead of Crippa.  Right on the line, Mulcaire passed El Madhi Lahoufi of Spain for fourth place.

In the women’s 200m, Sharlene Mawdsley of Newport ran a personal best time of 23.73 secs in the semi-finals. It was enough to see the 16-year-old athlete make the final where she finished eighth. Andrew Coscoran of Star of the Sea finished ninth in the men’s 1500m final.  In the 800m, Harry Purcell of Trim narrowly failed to progress from the semi-finals, with his time of 1:51.98 just .29 of a second off qualifying.

At an open meet in Loughborough, Ben Reynolds of North Down clocked a time of 13.61 secs in the 110m hurdles – the fastest Irish time this season. In Cali, Columbia, Elizabeth Morland  finished a respectable 10th of  thirty-six finishers in the heptathlon at the World Youth Championships  on 5569 points, with her strongest events the hurdles, long jump and 200m. Winner was Geraldine Ruckstuhl of Switzerland on 6037 points. In the hammer Michaela Walsh also made the top 10 with a throw of 52.73m
