Robert Heffernan launches his 2014 season in the 20km walk at Sunday’s European Athletics Race Walking Meeting in Lugano, Switzerland. This will be Heffernan’s first big outing since winning the world 50km title last summer in Moscow. Last month he was in New York for the Milrose Games, New York in February where he set a new Irish best performance of 5 mins 39 secs for the indoor mile.
Also competing in the 20km at Lugano are Alex Wright (Calry), Brendan Boyce (Letterkenny), Luke Hickey (Leevale) and James Treanor (Shercock ).
Meanwhile, Irish women’s javelin record holder Anita Fitzgibbon of Dundrum South Dublin leads a small Irish team at the European Cup Winter Throws in Leiria, Portugal this weekend. Also travelling are Tralee’s Clare Fitzgerald, who competes in both shot and discus, and Marco Pons of DMP who goes in the U23 discus.
Both Fitzgibbon and Fitzgerald are aiming for European Championships qualification – 57.40m for the javelin and 64m for the discus. Fitzgibbon improved the Irish javelin record to 54.92m last summer, while Fitzgerald has a best of 53.01m for the discus.
