Fourth Ballycotton Win For Ciobanu; First for O’Doherty

IMG_0610Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe  not only won the Ballycotton ’10’ for a fourth time today, he improved his personal best time for the course to an impressive  48 mins 58 seconds.

Ciobanu, disappointed to finish third at last weekend’s National Cross-Country Championships, was on his own for much of the race, with Bantry’s Alan O’Shea, the 2007 winner and third behind Ciobanu in 2011,  finishing over two minutes adrift.  East Cork duo Tim O’Donoghue and James McCarthy were third and fourth.

In the women’s race, Siobhan O’Doherty of Borrisokane took her first victory after finishing second  in  2010 and again last year behind course record holder Maria McCambridge. Her time of 57 mins 32 secs was off her best of  56 mins 56 secs set last year, but was enough for a comfortable victory over Jill Hodgins.

Fastest of the master men was Colm Burke of St Abban’s, who was also first M45, in  53 mins 55 secs. Less than a minute behind was Cathal O’Connell of St Finbarr’s who was first M50.  Back in action and winning the W65 age group was Joan Coyle of DSD.

* Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham WSAF won the Fit Magazine 10km  in 30 mins 40 secs – and picked up a nice piece of change for his troubles. Catherina McKiernan, aged 44,  was first home of the women in a sensational time of 34 mins 28 secs, with the top three women all under 35 minutes and all in the top ten overall.  DSD’s Sarah Mulligan was second in 34:43 and Claire Gibbons  of MSB third in 34.47.

* Conor Bradley of City of Derry and Letterkenny’s Anne Marie McGlynn  were the winners of the SSE Airtricity Walled City 10km, Derry. McGlynn’s time of 35 mins 16 secs was enough for sixth overall.

* Over 300 at today’s Urban Trail Series 8.5km/4.25km  on a beautiful morning in St Anne’s Park, Raheny (see pic).  Daniel Morrogh won the 8.5km, beating Jack Maughan by a second. Cecile Ollagnier was first woman. Lovely interesting lap around St Anne’s and – best of all – healthy snacks at the end. Other races please copy!
