Eoin Keith wins Northern Traverse. Somba, Shaughnessy tops at Dunboyne BHAA 5 mile.

Eoin KeithIrish ultra runner Eoin Keith has won the Northern Traverse from the west to the east coast of northern England in a time of 51 hours 37 minutes 23 secs. The 190 mile course with 16,000 ft of climb through fell, dale and moor, started at St Bees and took in the Lake District in Cumbria, the Pennines and the north Yorkshire moors before the finish at Robin Hood Bay. By the fourth of 16 checkpoints, Keith had built up a lead of almost half an hour and he stretched away further from the chasers as the race proceeded.

Dunboyne-based  Peter Somba won a quality men’s race at the Government Services BHAA 5-Mile in Dunboyne last night. Somba’s time of 24 mins 23 secs saw him shake off the challenge of Mark Kirwan, Tomas Fitzpatrick and Sean Hehir who came in within six seconds of each other. Winning the women’s race in 28 mins 26 secs was Laura Shaughnessy, with BHAA regulars Sonya McConnon and Niamh Devlin second and third.  Beating eleven other teams to win the A grade was RTE, with one of the many Bank of Ireland teams out last night finishing second ahead of Teachers.  Next Leinster BHAA outing is the Trinity Track Meet on Wednesday June 15 followed by the revamped Phoenix Park Trail 5km on Tuesday  June 28 (7.30).

In Cork, Mark Hanrahan and Sinead O’Connor were the winners of the annual John Buckley BHAA 5-Mile held at the Marina, with 839 finishers.
