Dunne and Curley are Leinster Masters

Newly crowned Dublin masters cross-country champion John Dunne of Raheny Shamrock added the Leinster title to his collection in Dunboyne today. Winning the women’s title was Tullamore’s Pauline Curley.

The top three in the men’s race  were resuming battle after the Dublin Championships only a week earlier in St Anne’s Park, when Shane O’Neil of Rathfarnham WSAF had dropped out early in the race. This time there was no stopping him and he chased Dunne right to the finish line. Dunne came home first in 20 mins 28 secs, with O’Neill two seconds behind for second and Raheny’s Ian Conroy just two seconds behind again for third.  Raheny finished best of the fifteen teams, with Portlaoise second and Ferbane third.

Equally close was the women’s race where Curley was pushed hard by Kilmore’s Jackie Carthy  with only two seconds in it. Third was Karen Costello of Dunleer, while fourth was Adele Walsh of St Senan’s. With no W60 category, Nuala Reilly and Brigid McCabe were recorded as finishing second and third W55 behind DMP’s Ann Sullivan. The men’s age groups went up to over 70. Tullamore won the team title from Drogheda and District.

Winning the inter races were Sinead Tangney of Sportsworld and Stephen Conroy of Celbridge AC, with both both also leading their clubs to team victory .

UCD’S Conor O’Keeffe and Rathfarnham’s Donna Mahon were the winners of the Howth hill race this morning – the opening round of the new-look IMRA Winter Spring League. A total of 266 finished the long race; see www.imra.ie
