West Waterford’s David McCarthy and local athlete Sara Treacy were the winners of the Eirgrid Dunboyne 4-mile today. In a competitive men’s race, McCarthy, back racing in recent weeks after a long break, finished in 18 mins 39 seconds, holding off the challenge of DSD’s Brandon Hargreaves. Finishing a close third was Raheny marathon man Mick Clohisey, who was chased home by Kevin Maunsell of Clonmel. Former winner Joe Sweeney of DSD was fifth. In the team competition, Raheny Shamrock beat Dunboyne.
The women’s race provided a showdown between last year’s winner Treacy and Sli Cualann’s Deirdre Byrne with only 12 seconds between them at the finish. Civil Service, led by Anna Sadowska in fifth place, proved best of the teams, with Dunboyne second.
