Dublin Masters: Wins for Fitzgerald and Dunne

Defending champion John Dunne  of Donore was the winner of the men’s race at the Dublin Masters’ Cross-Country Championships held in blustery St Anne’s Park.

Dunne held back in the early stages letting Mick Traynor and Brian Leahy of host club Raheny Shamrock and DSD’s Peter Matthews force the pace.  He pulled away on the last lap for a convincing win – and as a big bonus led Donore Harriers to M35 team victory. Matthews finished second and first M45, Leahy thrid and second M35  and Traynor fourth and first M50. Raheny was first M50 team.

In the women’s race Niamh Fitzgerald (formerly Beirne) of Lucan Harriers was first overall and first W40, with Donore’s Anne Curley second. Donore made it a men and women’s double when they finished first W35 team; Civil Service led by Grainne Butler was first W50 team.

Record numbers turned out for both races, with new teams from Lusk, Balbriggan and Portmarnock all performing in style. Pics at www.lindie.zenfolio.com
