Road Races, Road Races Everywhere!

A good croLIN_9097wd of club runners turned out for the Lucan 5km, with Raheny’s Conor Dooney coming home first in  15 mins 28 secs and DSD’s Sarah Mulligan the first woman in 17 mins 24 secs.

In the Phoenix Park, Mark Christie of Mullingar Harriers came a spectacular  comeback to win the Fit City 10km after a long break from running. His time was 30 mins 17 secs. Nine seconds adrift was MSB’s John Coghlan with Dan Mulhare of Portlaoise third in 30.34 and Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu fourth ahead of Derry-based Kenyan Freddy Sittuk. Raheny’s Aoife Talty was sixth overall and first woman in 35 mins 11 secs.

Gary O’Hanlon and Pauline Curley won the Run Kildare Marathon, which produced an interesting list of results. The race festival didn’t have an Athletics Ireland permit and local club runners (mostly) stayed away  but probably not for that reason. Likewise the Fit City 10km in the Phoenix didn’t attract the huge numbers expected, but on a weekend dominated by the Darkness into Light runs all over the country, with up to 40,000 taking part, this was no surprise. With little or no regulation, is the running boom about to implode?

* Abroad, Barbara Sanchez of Raheny finished 11th in the Prague Marathon in 2:42.03. It was her third marathon in as many months – she ran 2:37.14 in Seville and 2:38.41 in Rotterdam.
