Commonwealths: Mooney Misses Out; Pollock 19th in 10,000m

Zoe Brown no marked in the women’s pole vault, held in  treacherous and slippery conditions on the final night of athletics at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Only four made it past the final round, with the remainder going out at the opening height of 3.80.

A day earlier, Danny Mooney ran a solid race to finish 10th in the opening heat of the 1500m His time of 3:45.79 means he will not progress any further as a fastest loser. In the 10,000m, Paul Pollock finished 19th of 26 starters in 29 mins 11.46 secs.

Earlier in the week, Irish champion Katie Kirk, who is a British junior international, ran  a personal best 2:02.63 in the first and slowest of the two 800m semi-finals on Friday night.  She finished sixth.

A great run by Katie Kirk  in yesterday’s  heats had seen her through to  the  semi-finals of her second Commonwealth Games; she ran the 400m in Delhi four years ago. Running in the last of four heats, Kirk made her move off the final bend and finished second in 2 mins 3 secs.  In the 400m hurdles, Jason Harvey was well out of it finishing 5th in his heat in 62.06 secs. In the women’s steeplechase, dominated by the Kenyans, Kerry O’Flaherty finished 11th in 9:55.94.

In Tuesday’s women’s 400m hurdles, Christine McMahon finished 4th in her heat in  58.67.  Peter Glass finished 13th in the decathlon with 7287 points  (11.20 100m, 6.74 LJ, 13.69 SP, 1.93 HJ, 52.53 400m, 14.94 110H, 45.11 DT, 56.09 JT, 5:10.51 1500m), while Dempsey McGuigan threw 64.79m to finish 11th in the hammer. In the 110m hurdles, Ben Reynolds  finished sixth in his heat in 13.96 sec.

Gladys Ganiel was first of the Northern Irish athletes in action when she  finished 12th in the women’s marathon  on Sunday. Her time of 2:40.29 was her second fastest ever.  Winner was Kenya’s Flomena Daniel in 2:26.45.

At Hampden Park, also on Sunday, sprinters Jason Smith, Amy Foster and Leon Reid  lined out in the 100m heats. Foster  made it through to the semi-finals where she finished 2nd in her heat in 11.62 . Jason Smyth didn’t progress finishing 5th in his heat in 10.66, while Reid  was disqualified for false starting.
