Britton PB in Karlsruhe

Fionnuala Britton ran a personal best 8 mins 55.22  secs to finish third in the 3000m at the international  indoor meet in Karlsruhe, Germany and book her place at the European Indoors in Goteborg next month.
Meseret Defar of Ethiopia raced away from the field with six laps to go, finishing in a world-leading time of 8 mins 35.28 secs; her world record from 2007 at 8:23.27 still stands. Germany’s  Corinna Harrer was second in 8:51.0. Mary Cullen’s Irish record of 8:43.74 was set in 2009; the qualification mark for the European Indoors is 9 mins.
* Ciarain O Lionaird has run 7:53.69th for fifth at the NB Indoor Meet in the USA.  This  is inside the qualifying mark of 8 mins for the European Indoors.
* Stephen Scullion, a student at St Mary’s University College, finished third in the men’s long race at the BUCS Cross-Country Championships, hosted by the University of Leeds. Winner was Steve Connor of Southampton in 33 mins 8 secs, with Daniel Davis of St Mary’s second in 33.22 and Scullion third in 33.32.  Emilia Gorecka (Royal Holloway U of London) won the women’s race; Ireland’s Sara Treacy (Birmingham) was 22nd.
* Down Under, Paul Robinson of St Coca’s won the 1500m at the Hunter Classic in Newcastle, Australia in 3:42.54.
* A total of 304 finishers at todays’s Parkrun 5km in Malahide; first home was Richard O’Carroll in 17 mins 15 secs. Clonliffe’s Marie Byrne was first woman.  
*UCD’s Ciara Everard made up for her fall at the AAI Games last week when she ran a personal best  time of 2:04.82 to win the women’s 800m and break her own colleges indoor record at  the Irish Universities Indoor Championships in Athlone.
Everard moved ahead of UCC’s Laura Crowe – who also took a tumble last week – on the final lap.In the men’s 1500m, John Travers of AIT  had a comfortable victory over DCU’s Darren McBrearty, winning in 3:44.25. Thomas Barr of UL won the 400m  in 478.87, while in a competitive women’s 60m, Catherine McManus  of DCU ran a personal best 78.55 to beat Niamh Whelan of UL. In the field, Dave Tierney of UCD set a new record in the weight for distance.
* Niall Somers and Maire-Triona Keane were the winners at the Fingal Tri Club Duathlon in Balbriggan.
* Earlier in the week at an indoor meet in Vienna, Rose-Anne Galligan ran 4:15.53 for 3rd in the 1500m followed by Claire Tarplee with a PB of 4:14.58. In the men’s 1500m, Thomas Chamney  ran 3:45.72, Eoin Everard 3:47.67 and Joe Warne 3:48.46.

BUCS Cross-Country, Leeds
Men – Long race (318 finishers with 417 in B race)  : 1 Steve Connor (Southampton) 33.08, 2 Daniel Davis (St Mary’s University College) 33.22, 3 Stephen Scullion (St Mary’s) 33.32. Other Irish: 20 Eoghan Totten (Imperial College, London) 34.41.
Women (459 finishers): 1 Emilia Gorecka (Royal Hollway U of London) 24.15. Irish: 22 Sara Treacy (Birmingham) 25.23.
Parkrun5km, Malahide (304 finishers; www.parkrun.ie)
Men: 1 Richard O’Carroll 17.15, 2 David Brady 17.17 (PS), 3 Gerard Redmond (Raheny Shamrock) 17.37.Women: 1 Marie Byrne (Clonliffe) 19.24, 2 Jacqui Dunphy (Clonliffe) 20.03 3 Clodagh Byrne 21.16.
Fingal Duathlon, Balbriggan
Men: 1 Niall Somers 1:15.06, 2 Jude McEntee 1:17.36, 3 Eoin Brady 1:18.32. Women: 1 Maire-Triona Keane 1:26.55, 2 Vanessa Fenton 1:31.38, 3 Caoimhe Ni Mhurchu 1:34.13.
