Barr Under 49 secs for 400m Hurdles; 3000m PB for Britton. Geneva Results

Ferrybank’s Thomas Barr set a brilliant new Irish  400m hurdles record of 48.90 secs  at the Record EAP meet in Geneva, Switzerland. Barr won the race ahead of current European champion Rhys Williams of GB and now tops the European rankings. The time beats  Barr’s newly minted Irish best of 49.61 sec set two weeks ago.

Also in Geneva, Sarah Lavin of UCD ran 13.23 secs  to finish third in the 100m hurdles and make the Euro qualification mark. Also qualifying for Europe was Bandon’s Phil Healy with a personal best 11.53 secs in the 100m heats. Kelly Proper of Ferrybank ran a 23.38 second PB in the 200 and also won the long jump. In the men’s 200m, a time of 21.45 was enough to qualify Sligo’s Zak Irwin for the World Juniors later in the summer. Full Irish result below.

AT IRISHTOWN, Fionnuala Britton ran a personal best of 8:50.80  in a mixed 3000m at  the IMC/Crusaders meet, knocking over four seconds off her previous best of 8:55.01.

Donore’s John Travers  was out on his own in the race, running a time of 8:12.80 to finish almost 12 secodns clear of Gary Murray from St Malachy’s.  In the 800m, British Milers Club visitor Joe Maynard came home first in 1:47.75, with David McCarthy of West Waterford second in 1:49.30. British visitors finished first and second in the 1500m, with Dan Studley clocking 3:44.76 for victory ahead of Sean Fletcher Wylie. Annadale’s James O’Hare was third in 3:46.96, with Star of the Sea junior Andrew Coscoran beating John Coghlan  of MSB for fourth place.  Leevale multi-eventer Sam Healy won the 110m hurdles in 14.41 secs.

MARK ENGLISH of UCD finished 2nd behind Olympic and world champion David Rudisha of Kenya in the 800m at the New York Diamond League meet.  Rudisha finished in 1:44.62 with English’s time of 1:45.03  putting him fourth on the current European rankings.

BEN REYNOLDS ran a wind-assisted 13.59 secs for the 11om hurdles in Goteborg Winner in 13.30 secs was Olympic champion Dayron Robles of Cuba. Wind was +2.8.

ROSEANNE GALLIGAN of Newbridge finished third in the 800m with a time of 2:04.05 at the Iberoamericano Huelva meet in Spain on Thursday evening. In the 5000m, DSD’s Maria McCambridge  finished 10th in 15:51.55 in the 5000m while Tom Cotter  of Dunleer was 14th in the 3000m steeplechase in 8:50.45.

DAVID MCCARTHY  finished 4th in the 1500m at last Wednesday’s Nijmegen Global meet in the Netherlands. His time was 3.39.34; Ronald Musagala  won in 3:37.7.
