Saturday Round-Up: Bohermeen Win For McCarthy

West Waterford’s David McCarthy  won the Patrick Bell 5km in Bohermeen in a superb time of 14 min 26 . McCarthy was out on his own for much of the race,  leaving  Colin Costello from Star of the Sea  and Dunshaughlin’s Robbie Matthews to battle it out for second place.  In the end it was Costello who got there first finishing  50 seconds behind McCarthy and just four seconds clear of Matthews. First woman was Fionnuala Ross from Armagh.
Freddy Keron Sittuk travelled back north today to lead home 900 finishers at the re-scheduled Larne Marathon. Sittuk’s time of 68.20 put him just clear of second placed Alan O’Hara from North Belfast Harriers and Clonliffe running machines Gary O’Hanlon. First woman was Julie Balmer of North Down.

* Breandan O’Neill of DSD/Florida State  ran 29:53.25 to finish 9th in the 10,000m final at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon on Thursday. Winner was Lawi Lalang of Arizona in 29:29.65. Tom Cotter of Dunleer was ninth in the steeplechase.

At the opening day of three in the Dublin Juvenile Championships in Santry, Clonliffe Harriers dominated the combined W17/18 800m final, with Sally Ahern taking the lead with 300m to go and coming home first ahead of Laura Tuite, with Hope Saunders fourth overall but third W17. Another Clonliffe victory came in the M15 800m, when Joe Hession lead from the start. In second place was Daren Redmond, also Clonliffe.
 

Today, the action was again in Santry with a fine victory for Nadia Power of Templeogue in the W17 800m. In the throws, DSD dominated the younger age groups, with Esme Waller winning the W13 shot, followed by four of her club mates, Aoife Taaffe leading another DSD clean sweep in the W13 javelin and Lucy Coleman Black winning the W14 shot from her clubmate Caoimhe Shanley Mee who was also second in the javelin behind Rebecca PowLIN_0440er of Donore.

Also for DSD, Sarah Torrans won the W15 200m.  In the 1500m races, Conliffe’s Joseph Hession added the M15 title to the 800m he had won the previous evening, while Laura Tuite, also Clonliffe,  beat her clubmate HopeSaunders to win the W17 title.

Action continues in Tallaght tomorrow (Sun) .

* A record 479 turned out for the Marlay Parkrun, with lots of PBs. It was the first time there were more in Marlay than Malahide, though Malahide’s record attendance (after 30 runs) is higher at 513.
