It was a case of good news and and slightly less good news for John Travers of Donore at last night’s Dublin Graded Meet in Santry. Travers beat DSD’s Joe Sweeney, who had pushed the pace early, to win the 5000m in 13 mins 56.99 secs . It was Travers first sub-14 second run – and it came in the week he had been hoping to run at the World University Games.
Road specialist Robbie Mathews of Dunshaughlin won the second A race in 15:22.54, with a total of 54 lining out in the three 5000m races.
Caroline Crowley of Crusaders won the women’s 3000m in her debut at the distance. Her time of 9:58.66, put her comfortably clear of the field, with Liffey Valley’s Leoan O’Reilly outsprinting Raheny junior Maria O’Sullivan for second.
Over 800m, Celtic’s Niamh Donnelly was the fastest of the women in 2.15.69 and Kristap Valters of Clonliffe best of the men in 1:54.80.
Newry’s Aisling Crossey moved down to 400m to beat Ciara McCallion of Clonliffe in 56.44 secs. Lorcan O’Connor of Emerald was fastest of the men in 50.08.
In the field, Dunboyne dominated the hammer led by Padraig White who threw 62.41, while Ian Rogers of Clonliffe won the pole vault, clearing 4.55. Claire Beauchamp of Raheny threw 44.33m with the 3kg hammer, while her club mate Mieke Kiernan, with the 4kg weight, scored an excellent 41.98.
* At the World Student Games in Kazan, Loughborough’s Claire Tarplee ran 4:18.77 to grab the last qualifying place for the 1500m final.
*Nicolas Simonin was the only Irish orienteer to make the final of the classic long distance race at the World Championships in Finland after finishing 13th in his heat, with the top 15 going through. In the final Simonin finished a creditable 33rd in 1 hrs 57 mins 13 secs. Winner was France’s many times world champion Thierry Gueorgiou who spent some time in Ireland last year. Neil Dobbs missed out on a place in the final by just one place when he finished 16th in his heat. Conor Short finished 25th, and Rosalind Hussey 22nd in the women’s heats.
None of the Irish made it through the sprint event heats, with Niamh O’Boyle 20th and Susan Lambe 21st of the women and Darren Burke 22nd, Josh O’Sullivan Hourihan 24th and Kevin O’Boyle 33rd of the men.
