Some great running at the Dublin City Council Road Races in St Anne’s Park, Raheny today. Brian Maher was in a class of his own in the open 4-mile race with his time of 19 mins 6 secs putting him well over a minutes clear of the chasers led by Bernard Roe.
In sixth place was Maria McCambridge, like Maher a member of the Marathon Mission. Maria was also third over 35 and this race was a useful leg-turner before next weekend’s Rotterdam Marathon.
Winning the women’s 2-mile was Kate O’Neill with Orla Gormley, another BHAA stalwart, second and first veteran. Official race starter was the Dublin Lord Mayor Naoise O Muiri who then jumped in and completed the race in 33 mins 59 secs.
* Emmett Jennings of DCU and DSD was a clear winner of the Ras UCD 5km in Belfield today. Jennings led from the start, with UCD athletes taking up the next three places. Rob Corbally just held off the fast-finishing Conan Mac Caughui for second, with Donal O h Annrachtaigh fourth. Aoife O’Connor from Thomastown was first home of the women, with DCU’s Maire Nic Amhlaibh making up ground on the second lap to finish second ahead of Caoimhe Daniels from GCH.
Finishing in an impressive time of just over 21 minutes was Aonghus “The Chicken” O Briain, who admitted that his took his “head” off on the quieter parts of the route.Well done also to the Bear, the Tiger and the Hula boys and girls!
After the race was finished, there was tea, sandwiches and massages for all, plus the opportunity to stock up on home-made cakes and buns from a special charity stall. All funds went to UCD’s Volunteers Overseas programme.. A lovely race – pics at www.lindie.zenfolio.com.
* Aileen (Morrison) Reid finished 12th with a good swim and cycle at the opening World Triathlon Series race in Auckland, New Zealand. Bryan Keane left the water not too far off the leading bunch in the men’s race, but was forced to drop out after a crash damaged his bike.
* A total of 772 ran Dublin Parkruns today – and two more Parkruns are on the way; one in Dublin and one in Cork. Interesting times for commercial race organisers.
