Sligo and DSD Win Senior Titles at Road Relays

Dermot McDermott

On a day packed with hard racing, Sligo Athletic Club, anchored by Dermot McDermott, took their first ever men’s national senior relay title, just beating Raheny Shamrock to the line.  McDermott  and Raheny’s Cillian O’Leary had set off together on the final leg,  with McDemrott only breaking away with the line in sight. Making up the team were 800m specialist David Harper, Alberto Sanchez,

Even closer was the women’s race with DSD’s Sarah Mulligan giving it her all to  retain the title for her club.  With the line just yards away, Mulligan looked on her last legs but sheer will kept her ahead of the fast-finishing Aoife Talty of Raheny.

This was a brilliant win for DSD, with Niamh Devlin keeping in touch with the leaders on on the opening mile.  Linda Byrne then improved on her own course record with a time of 10 mins 31 secs on the two-mile leg where she was chased hard by Fiona Roche of Raheny. Mulligan then bravely finished off the job, with both teams given a time of 21 mins  6 secs – a big improvement on the old course record of 21:28.

In the master’s races, an eyeballs-out two-mile leg from Paul Fleming gave Rathfarnham WSAF the men’s over 35 title, with Ronan Kearns bringing the team home. In the women’s race, a typically gutsy performance from Annette Kealy, also on the two-mile leg,  gave Raheny the lead, leaving it to Sharon Phelan to continue Raheny’s winning streak in this age category.

A record number of over 250 entries had signed up,  with the masters races particularly well supported.  Teams came from all over the country, with Ennis, Craughwell, Finn Valley and, of course, Sligo, among those who faced long journeys home. Also notable were  multiple teams from clubs with thriving Meet and Train/Fit for Life sections such as Drogheda and District, Tallaght, Dunboyne, Crusaders, Donore and host club Raheny.

With the weather staying kind, everyone enjoyed the chance to meet up with old friends and new and catch up on the gossip; with more and more men and women of all ages joining clubs, this great event can only get better! Pics at www.lindie.zenfolio.com

* Gary O’Hanlon of Clonliffe Harriers won the Connemarathon in 2 hrs 35 mins 15 secs. English visitor Catherine Hogan was first woman in 3:27.26. Waterford’s Mary Jennings – who has made a loose promise that she’ll retire when she reaches her 100th marathon – finished fourth of the women. Not bad for a 57 year old!  Keith Whyte won the ultra, with Amy Masner of Parnell first woman. A total of 2,71.15 finished the three races on offer, almost 2,000 of those in the half marathon won by GCH’s Matt Bidwell in 79 mins 29 secs..
