Thomas Barr breezed through the opening round of the 400m hurdles at the World University Games in Gwangju, Korea today. Running in the first of six heats, Barr came home first in 49.96 – the fastest time of the day. Second was Michal Broz of the Czech Republic in 50.36 – the second fastest time recorded across the heats.Barr now runs in tomorrow’s semi-finals (8.42am Irish time)
In the opening heat of the women’s 800m, Ciara Everard qualified comfortably when she finished second in 2:05.36. All the remaining three heats produced faster times – winner of heat 2 was Egle Balciunaite of Lithuania in 2:05.12, while third was South Africa’s Anuscha Nice in 2:05.47. Heat 2 was won in 2:04.34 by Fabienne Kohlmann of Germany, with the Russian Mariia Nikolaeva second in 2:04.98 and Natalja Piliusina of Lithuania third in 2:05.12. Four athletes ran under 2:05 in the third heat, led by Natalia Evanelidou of Cyprus in 2:04.18. Fastest of all was the fourth and final heat won by Angela Kate Petty of New Zealand in 2:03.85, with Docus Ojok of Uganda second in 2:04.70. It leaves Everard 13th fastest of the 16 qualifiers for tomorrow’s semi-finals (10.10am Irish time).
John Travers came safely through the heats of the men’s 1500m, finishing second of a bunch of five in the third heat. Winner was Egor Nikolaev of Russia in 3:44.28 – the fastest time of the day. Travers in 3:44.28 secs was the second fastest. Next up is the final on Friday (12.15 Irish time)
