Look for an overall result of the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon and you won’t find one – not on the TDL site which looked after the timing, nor on the WMM site itself. There you can only search for a result if you have a name or race number (finishers are referred to as “wonderful ladies”, which says it all really).
Only extreme persistence will give you, say, the top 100 finishers, or how many broke 60 minutes, or even an exact figure for the number of starters and finishers. Or, indeed, how many ran/walked/tottered without availing of the chipped timing. No way will you find the names of the clubs most of the 3,000 or so up front belonged to – only the county of origin is given, unless you come from the USA, when only the country is given.
It’s all a bit frustrating, so for those who still see the WMM as a flagship event for women’s sport, here are a few statistics I’ve unearthed by searching for common names (I started with Mary, of which there were 1,088, and then moved on to Anne – 1,258!) and low race numbers (elite runners mostly got numbers between 1 and 140).
* About 1,000 women finished in about 54 mins 30 secs. Finishing 1,002 was Mary O Colmain in 54 mins 50 mins. A time of 55:19 was enough for 1,100 place. Mary, at the age of 62, is one of the small handful of women to have run all 32 WMMs to date – and she shows no sign of stopping. Also running was her daughter Niamh of the Sli Cualann club, who finished 40th in 41:50.
* There were some brilliant runs by masters, most notably that of Irish athletics legend Catherina McKiernan who at the age of 44, can still break 35 minutes for 10km. She finished 3rd . Former world master 10,000m champion Carmel Parnell of Cork club Leevale finished 31st and 1st W55 in 39:45. Colette Tuohy from Mayo AC was 18th overall and 1st W45. Rose Lambe of Carrick Runners was first over 50, finishing 49th in 41:10. Also in the W55 class, Sheelagh Jones of DSD finished 79th in 44:29, while Carmel McDhomhnaill from West Limerick was 98th in 45:34, and Nuala Reilly of Drogheda and District 110th in 45:53. Great to see Joan Coyle from host club DSD back in action; she finished in 51:42 Home from Australia was Sue Zlany, also DSD, who finished in 44:57. Most of these are women who started running because of the mini marathon – and are still at it.
* Adele Walsh of St Senan’s just broke 40 minutes, finishing 32nd in 39:58.
* About 300 broke 50 minutes; Mary Butler another WMM completist, finished 384th in 50 mins 33 secs.
* 2,020 women finished in under 58 mins 43 secs
* About 5,000 were under 67 minutes – 67 mins 4 secs was enough for 4,908 place; a time of 67.28 came in 5,077th. That’s still fairly shifting.
*Around 10,000 finished in under 80 minutes and around 15,000 in under 91 minutes.
* 92 women finished in 13 secs between 2,390 (59:53) and 2,480 place (60:08); 83 women finished in 13 seconds between 14,939 and 15,022 place.
* Just shy of 40,000 finished – Mary Finnegan with a time of 2 hrs 43 mins 51 secs was 39,037.
