Freddy Misses Out on Strawberry ‘Half’ Record; plus round-up

IMG_0324Freddy Keron Sittuk set off on a mission to break the course record at the 5th Strawberry Half Marathon in Enniscorthy today, but the weather decided otherwise . Although it wasn’t cold, gusting winds sapped the energy and though the second half of the course is less hilly,  it proved a battle all the way to the finish line. The course record time of 68 mins 4 secs came when Sittuk came into view  on the other side of the river with a bridge still to cross and about 400m to go. He finished in 69 mins 51 secs – not bad for a man who had won the Walled City Marathon in Derry only a week earlier.

“I tried to run an even race but it’s a very hilly course and it was windy. Very tough,” said the 32-year-old Kenyan who was winning the race for a second year.  He’s staying with SBR’s Tom Hogan for the next week or so and it was Hogan finished second  in 73 mins 12. On a good day for SBR, Paul Lynch  was third and Myles Gibbons fourth.

First woman was Orna Dilworth of Sportsworld who finishing in 89 mins 37 secs – just outsprinting Annaleigh Hoare of Kilmore. Third and first master was Olwyn Dunne of Crusaders.
