Javelin thrower Anita White of DSD moved closer to the European Championships qualifying mark with a throw of 51.43m at the opening day of the Winter Throws Meet in Arad, Romania. White’s throw came in the first round and she finished 11th. Her target is 57.50m; next outing is in Swinford in a few weeks’ time.
In the W23 shot, Michaela Walsh from Swinford finished 7th with a best of 13.78m in the fifth round. Claire Fitzgerald of Tralee finished 10th in the senior women’s shot with 14.72m. Competing tomorrow is Sean Breathnach of Galway in the men’s shot.
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of DSD narrowly missed out on a place in the women’s 800m final at the NCAA Indoors Championships in Birmingham Alabama. Running for Villanova, Buttner finished a close fourth with a time of 2:04.77 in the opening heat. Winner was Princeton’s Cecilia Barowski in 2:04.44.
In the 5000m, Sarah Collins, who grew up in Switzerland but has family roots in Cork, finished 12th in 16:33.96. Winner was Molly Seidel of Notre Dame in 15:15.21.
Best of the Irish men was Clonmel’s Sean Tobin who ledĀ Ole Miss to an incredible 3rd in the distance medley relay. Tobin came from a distant 7th to 3rd in the last lap, running 3:57:76 for the last leg mile. Trim’s Harry Purcell was running for Villanova in the same race; he ran the 400m leg in 48.32 secs and the team finished 6th with a time of 9:34.30 in a closely fought race. Oregon were the winners in 9:27.27.
CUSHINSTOWN’S multi-eventer Elizabeth Morland set a new championships record of 5.85m when winning the W18 long jump and the opening day of the Glo Health Irish Juvenile Indoors in Athlone.
On the track, Molly Scott of St LOT broke the W18 60m record of 7.68 secs with a winning time of 7.42 secs.
Other records came in the W18 pole vault when Ellen McCartney soared over 3.20m. On a good day for girls’ pole vaulting records also fell in theĀ U15,U16 (equal) ,U17 and U19 age groups.
In the shot, Liscarroll’s Ciara Sheehy broke the W15 3.25kg record with a mighty heave of 13.59m. Finn Valley’s Joseph Gillespie soared over 1.56m to improve the M13 high jump best. More tomorrow – and next week.
ON THE ROADS, Breege Connolly who currently lies third on the list of marathon qualifiers for Rio ’16 finished second behind Natahsa Adams of Letterkenney at the Bundoran 10-Mile. Adams ran 58.mins 7 secs; Connolly 59:01. Race winner was Glaslough’s Conor Duffy in 52:32.
