Callaghan, Hickey win Meath Spring ‘Half’. Morland makes it a hat trick

Eoin Callaghan of Star of the Sea and Ciara Hickey of Bros Pearse were the winners of the Meath Spring Half Marathon in Bohermeen. IMG_8028Callaghan’s time of  68 mins 20 secs saw him finish over three minutes ahead of David Simpson, one of a large group from Newcastle and District in action.

Hickey, who is the Dublin masters’ cross-country champion, was even further ahead of  the chasers in the women’s race with a time of  76 mins 58 secs. In Downpatrick, Paddy Hamilton and Kerry O’Flaherty were the winners at Jimmy’s ’10’.

SEAN BREATHNACH of GCH improved his outdoor best for the shot to  18.22m at the Winter Throws Meet in Arad Romania today. It was enough for 7th place.  Just last week, Breathnach set a new Irish indoor record of 18.27m at the Leinster Championships in Athlone. Also in Arad, Claire Fitzgerald of Tralee finished 16th in the discus with 48.26m, while Michaela Walsh of Swinford  threw 51.64m in the U23 women’s hammer.

ELIZABETH MORLAND of Cushinstown took two more gold medals at the Glo Health Juvenile Indoor Championships in Athlone today. Morland won the W19 high jump with a best of 1.74m and the 60m hurdles in a time of 8.44 seconds. Morland had set a new championships record in the long jump a day earlier.

Molly Scott of SLOT, who had won the 60m in a new record time of 7.42 secs on Saturday, added another record to her collection when she won the W18 60m hurdles with a time of 8.33 seconds.

Aaron Sexton of North Down won the M17 200m in 21.97 secs – a second record for Sexton who had run 7.07 secs for 60m a day earlier. In the M18 200m, David McDonald of Menapians was also in record breaking form with a time of 21.77 secs, whilel in the W17 200m, Lauren Cadden of Sligo’s time of 24.88 secs was a European Youth Games qualifier. Best of the middle distance races was the M17 800m, won by Tullamore’s Mark Milner in 1:55.03. In the field, Ryan Carthy Walsh of Adamstown won the M18 high jump with 2.06m.
