Triathlon: Reid and Murphy both 5th in San Diego Sprint

msj_0301 (HR)Triathletes Aileen Reid and Conor Murphy  launched their 1025 campaigns by competing in the Tinonman Sprint Triathlon in San Diego, USA; the pair had been training in the area  and were using the race as a fitness test before the forthcoming World Triathlon Series, with the opening race in Abu Dhabi on March 7.

In the men’s race, Armagh man Murphy finish the 750m swim in fourth place and held on to that position on the 40km cycle before dropping one place on the 5km run to finish in 56 mins 6 secs; winner was Joe Maloy of the USA in 55.15.  Reid had a good swim, coming out of the water in sixth place but a poor transition to the bike stage saw her falling back to ninth. She recovered with the quickest cycle of the day and then produced  the fourth fastest run of the day to finish fifth.  Her time was 60 mins 30 secs; winner was Summer Cooke of the USA in 58.08.
