David Hynes of Waterford IT just beat DCU’s Steven Colvert to win the men’s 100m at the second day of the Irish University Athletics Championships on the new Sonia O’Sullivan track at the Mardyke, Cork.
Both men were timed at 10.66 seconds. In third place was QUB’s Jonathan Browning with a time of 10.85.Stephanie Creaner of DCU won both the women’s 100m and 200m.
UCD’s Mark English stepped down a distance to win the 400m in 47.30 seconds. Also for UCD, Dan King won the men’s 800m in 1:56 and then helped his team to gold in the 4×400. Over the longer distances, John Coghlan of DCU comfortably won the 5000m in 14 mins 27 secs, followed by Ben Thistlewood of UCC in 15:03. Una Britton of UL won the women’s 5000m in 17 mins 45 secs, while Becky Woods of Trinity won both the 1500m and steeplechase.
On the first day of competition, John Travers of Athlone IT won the men’s 10,000m.

In a cat and mouse race, DCU’s Paul Robinson, who went on to win the mile at the Spar Great Ireland Run two days later, pushed the early pace, and was soon joined by Alan O’Shea, who went to the front midway through the race. Travers took over with a few laps to go, winning in a very respectable time of 30 minutes 36 secs. Robinson was second, with Liam Feely of UL passing O’Shea for third.
In the men’s steeplechase, Emmett Jennings beat his DCU team mate Jayme Rossiter, crossing the line in 9 mins 36 secs. Rossiter was six seconds behind in 9:42 with Rob Corbally of UCD third in 9 mins 51 secs.
Sandra Lawler was a clear winner of the women’s 100m hurdles in 14.33; Sarah Doyle was second in 16.44 and Laura Frey third in 17.30. UCC’s Ed O’Halloran won the men’s 110m hurdles.
In the field events, Clare Fitzpatrick of UCC set a new universities record of 14.08 in the shot and also won the discus and 8kg weight events.
* Race walker Laura Reynolds finished fifth in the women’s 20km at the Podebrady International , in the Czech Republic. Her time was 1:34.07. In the men’s 20km, Michael Doyel was 28th with 1:29.46, James Treanor 36th in 1:33.18 . In the junior 10km, Evan Lynch was 14th in 45.43.
* Raheny’s Aoife Talty set a new women’s course record of 17 mins 4 secs at the Malahide Parkrun.
* Ultra runner Eoin Keith was first home at the 42km-Wicklow Glacier Lakes Relay , beating both individuals and teams.
