Ireland’s Sarah McCormack finished a fighting ninth in the women’s race at the World Mountain Running Championships in Betws-y-Coed, Wales. Uganda’s Sally Chesang, the women’s junior winner from last year when the race was uphill only,  underlined her huge potential when she won the race  from the British trio of  Emily Collinge, Emma Clayton and Sarah Tunstall.

In the men’s race, Raheny’s Ian Conroy finished a respectable 24th – a big improvement on his 58th of last year on an uphill only course in Italy. Making it a Ugandan double was Fred Musobo. Ugandans have dominated the race for the past few years.

No Irish competed in the junior races, although Irish teams did compete in the British and Irish Junior International which served as a curtain raiser to the World Championships programme.
