Steeplechase PB for Treacy; Irish Youth Heptathlon Record for Morland

V__A7E7Two great performances by young Irish athletes this weekend- in Belgium at the Flanders Cup in Leuven, Sara Treacy of Dunboyne  won the women’s steeplechase  in a new personal best time of 9:47.92; 9:45 was the A standard for the European Championships starting in Zurich on Tuesday.

After a string of good results, Sara, who works full-time, as a doctor in Birmingham, is aiming to qualify for next year’s World Championships and Rio 2016 after that. Since the start of the year, she has run in Dunboyne colours after her original club Moynalvy Kilcloon folded. Also running in Belgium was Leevale’s Michelle Finn who finished fourth in 10:08.78.

Then, at the British U17 Combined Events Championships in Bedford, Elizabeth Morland of  Cushinstown not only Elizwon the W17 title by 70 points but set a new Irish youth record of  5062 points. A week earlier, Elizabeth had won the Irish youth title in Tullamore.

AT SANTRY, Ireland won the annual Celtic International U16/U18 match against  Scotland and Wales. At U16 level, there were wins for Kevin McGrath 1500m Daniel Ryan 100m hurdles, Robbie Marrs high jump, Molly Scott 80m hurdles, Lauren Gleeson long jump and Orlaith O’Brien javelin as well as the mixed relay team,

At U18 level, Joseph Ojemumi won the 100m in 11.50 for the  Irish development team, despite a 6.8 headwind. Other wins came from Scott Gibson 400m, Mustafa Nasir 800m, Gary Campbell 1500m, Donagh Mahon high jump, Jurjis Kanash pole vault, Jordan Hoang triple jump, Clodagh O’Mahoney 100m hurdles, Kelly Ann Doyle 400m hurdles, Maria Casey triple jump, Annie Stafford  long jump and the M18 relay team. Ireland finished on 184 points, followed by Wales 160 and Scotland 136.

TAKING A SWERVE away from athletics to congratulate Scott Evans who won the men’s singles at the Rio Badminton Grand Prix in Brazil.   Evans was two games down in his match with Germany’s Dieter Donke but came back to win 7-11,6-11, 11,6,11-7,11-8. In a closely fought  mixed doubles final, Chloe Magee and Sam Magee  lost out to Germany’s Max Schwenger and Carla Nelte 10-11,10-11,11-10,11-8. The tournament,  a test for Rio 2016, used a new best of five game format (scores up to 11).

MARTIN FAGAN AND ORLA DRUMM  were the winners of the Kearney Cycles Streets of Galway 8km on Saturday night. Fagan, who returned from a two-year drugs ban earlier this year, finished comfortably clear of a class field with Sean Hehir of Rathfarnham second and Freddy Keron Sittuk third.
