Round-up: Smyth, Keogh Take Leinster Novice Titles

Rachel Smyth of St Coca’s was a clear winner of the women’s race at the Leinster Novice and Masters’ Cross-Country held in Dunboyne.

Smyth’s time of 15 mins 59 secs but her well over a minute clear of the chasers, led by Grace O’Rourke of DSD and Ballyroan’s Grace McConnell. As they had done at the Dublin Novice Championships, Liffey Valley packed well to finish first team  ahead of Crusaders.

Far closer was the men’s novice race, with Eric Keogh of Donore just making it to the line ahead of Karol Cronin of Sportsworld and Lee van Haeften of Donore. In fourth place, John Reidy was leading Crusaders to victory.

Winning the women’s master’s race was Mary Laverty of North East Runners, with Dunboyne’s Emilia Dan second and first W40. Former Irish international Niamh Richardson  of Kilkenny was fourth and first W45, while Tullamore Ann Carroll, a previous winner of the British and Irish Masters’ cross-country was first W50. Carroll is the older  sister of Pauline Curley, who runs the Dublin Marathon today. Tullamore proved best of the teams.

In a fiercely competitive men’s trace, just 10 seconds separated the top five, with John Fenlon of St Michael’s just getting the better of Rathfarnham’s Shane O’Neill for the title. In third place, John Buckley was leading Tullamore to a comfortable team victory, with all four of their runners  in the top 15.  Just behind him was Raheny’s Mick Traynor, who was first M45.  First M50 was Gerry Doyle of Rathfarnham, while Brian Lynch of North East Runners beat Ballyroan’s Martin McDonald  to take the M55 category.

In the juvenile races, Mullingar Harriers won five of the eight team titles on offer.

* Breege Connolly who ran a personal best at the Berlin Marathon last month, was first woman at the Enniskillen Spoooketacular 5km on Friday evening.
