Silver for Irish Junior Boys in Wales

A silver for the junior boys team was the high point for the Irish team at the SIAB Schools’ International Cross-Country, held in Dinefwr Park, Wales.
Alan Monahan from St Pat’s Navan led the boys home in seventh place – he was the first non-English runner to finish. Close behind were Christy Conlon of Rathmore Grammar in Belfast and Eoin Looney (St Joseph’s Spanish Point). With solid packing from Kevin McGrath (St Pat Navan), Oisin O Gibne ( Drogheda Grammar), Ruairi Casey (Colaiste Daibheid), Eoin McCann (Rathmore Belfast) and Cormac Dalton (St Joseph’s Rochfortbridge), the teams finished a strong second behind the mighty English team.
Best of the Irish girls was Siofra O’Flaherty from St Leo’s Carlow, who was ninth in the junior 3000m, again dominated by an English squad who took the first six places. With Fiona Everard (Dunmanway), Aisling Kelly (St Joseph’s Spanish Point), Rose Finnegan (Eurka Kells) and Eimear Fitzpatrick (Our Lady’s Terenure) coming home together in 17thto 20th places, the Irish took bronze from Wales by just three points.

Welsh athlete Jac Hopkins was the only non-English winner on the day winning the boys’ inter race from Scotland’s Jonathan Glen. Best of the Irish was 11th-placed Kevin Mulcaire (St Flannan’s Ennis) with Pierre Murchan (St Declan’s Cabra) just behind for 12th. In a closely-fought team competition, the Irish boys weren’t far off a medal.
The inter girls also finished fourth, led home by Clodagh O’Reilly of Loreto Cavan in 12th place.
