Mark English of UCD ran an Olympic qualifying time of 1:45.49 for fourth in a top quality 800m at the Anniversary Games in London. “Thrilled to run Olympic qualifying time in London today. Love this track and crowd,” he tweeted afterwards.
The standard for Rio ’16 is 1:45.80 – faster than the 1:46.00 need for the World Championships next month in Beijing.
In the women’s 5000m, Mary Cullen of North Sligo was six seconds off her season’s best with a time of 15 mins 32.76 secs; she had been aiming for a time under the Rio ’16 mark of 15:20. Thomas Barr of Ferrybank, clearly troubled by a hip injury, still got under 50 seconds in the 400m hurdles. He finished sixth in 49.85 secs.
“Not the best race, but it was touch and go an hour before the race with the hip injury, so I’m relatively happy,” he said.
Highlights of the Morton Games a night earlier were stirring victories for Letterkenny’s Karl Griffin in the 800m, Ciara Mageean in the women’s mile and Kelly Proper in the 200m. In the Morton Mile, Thomas Cotter of Dunleer became the latest Irish member of the sub-four minute club. There was also a good 45.99 secs time for Brian Gregan in the 400m; his best this season in 45.98 secs.
