Schools: New SIAB record for Sheridan as Ireland finishes a strong second

Eoin Sheridan  set a new boys’ discus record at the SIAB Schools International in Cardiff Wales on Saturday, with his throw of 55.43 adding well over a metre to the record of 54.18m set 30 years ago in 1984.

Sheridan was just one of the stars of a strong Irish team than finished a creditable second overall behind England.

IMG_0697In the girls’ throws,  the weights had been reduced so that when Michaela Walsh won the 3kg hammer with a mighty heave of 58.28, it was establishing a new best mark. Walsh also won the 3kg shot with a 15.08m effort, putting over a metre ahead of her nearest rivals. In the hammer she was four metres clear of the opposition.

Other wins for the Irish girls came in the 100m, won easily by Megan Marrs in 12.01, from Amaris Borel in the 300m hurdles in 43.19, and from Elizabeth Morland in the long jump with a 5.87 leap.

On the track,  Brian Masterson ran a personal best 48.58 to win the boys 400m  after a battle with Owen Richardson of England who finished in 48.87 . In the 3000m, Kevin Mulcaire  produced a strong finish to cross the line in 8:36.76 and see off the challenge of Stephen Ferroni of England. Interestingly, the record in this event lies with one John Treacy who ran 8:20.4  in 1974 – a mere  40 years ago

Winning the 100m hurdles  was Jack Murphy in 13.55, while  dominating the  3000m walk was Aaron Egan , whose time of 12:59.52 put him over 46 seconds ahead of his team mate Andrew Bell. Keith Marks won the high jump soaring over 2.00m.

There were also a number of Irish second places – for Yuri Kanash in the pole vault, Molly Scott in the 80m hurdles, Niamh O’Connor in the walk,Maria Carey in the triple jump, Orlaith O’Brien in the javelin, and for three of the four relay teams.  Alison Armstrong also finished second in the non-scoring girls’ steeplechase. Finishing third were Daniel Ryan in the long jump, Jordan Hoang triple jump, Jack Magee javelin, Carla Sweeney 800m, Nadia Power 1500m,  and the boys’ 4x400m team.
