Darragh McElhinney of CP Bheanntrai proved the star of the Irish schools team at the annual SIAB Cross-Country hosted by Wales at Newport when he won the U17 inter boys’ race in some style.
McElhinney shook off the challenge of a strong England team to come home in 19 mins 34 secs for the 6.3km course. That put him 14 seconds clear of England’s Lachlan Wellington. The race was dominated by the white of England and the green of Ireland with eight English and three Irish in the top eleven.
England finished best of the teams, with Ireland second thanks to strong runs from Keelan Kilrehil of Col Iascaigh Sligo seventh, Christopher O’Reilly from Douglas CS in Cork 11th and good support from Shay McEvoy (St Kieran’s Kilkenny),Shane Coffey (Naas CBS), Thomas Connelly (CBS Cork) and Thomas Devaney (St Gerard’s Castlebar).
Ireland also finished second behind England in the junior boys’ race, with the team led home by Sean Donoghue of St Declan’s Cabra in ninth place and good runs from Matthew Whelan (Naas CBS) and Seanie Dalton (Malahide CS) in particular.
Best of the Irish girls was Aimee Hayde of St Mary’s Newport who finished fifth in the junior girls’ race. Sarah Healy of Holy Child Killiney was eighth of the inter girls. Both teams finished fourth.
