Irish junior international Michaela Walsh of SM&P Swinford was an emphatic winner of the senior girls shot at the Glo Health Connacht Schools Track and Field Championships in Athlone IT. Walsh’s 14.94m effort in the third and final round put her over seven metres clear of the field. Walsh was the only competitor in the senior girls’ hammer where she threw 51.46m.
Adam Sheridan of Rice College Westport won the junior boys’ discus with an impressive 38.82m; he also won the boys minor shot with a new championship best of 14m. Winning the senior girls’ discus with 28.29m was Jenny Chambers of SH Westport. Chambers also won the javelin with 25.31m. In the boys’ javelin, best throw of the day came from David Johnson of Bish who won the inter boys’ title with a first round throw of 43.72m.
Meadhbh Gallagher of St Joseph’s Castlebar was an impressive winner of the junior girls’ 1500m, with her time of 4 mins 52.6 secs putting her over three seconds ahead of Saoirse O’Brien from SH Westport. Her time was the fastest of the day.
Fastest boys’ time came in the inter race, won by Mark Powell of Yeats College Galway in 4:23.9. Powell was pushed hard by Adam Philips of St Nathy’s Ballaghdereen who finished in 4:25.6. Winning the senior boys’ 800m in some style was Cian McBride of Summerhill Sligo in 1:57.45.
Winner of the senior boys 100m was Graham Kerr of Sligo Grammar in 11.13 secs, with Cillian Greene of Pres Athenry second in 11.19; In the 200m, that result was reversed with Green beating Kerr to win in 22.11 secs. Rachel Keane of Moate CS won the senior girls’ 100m in 12.5 secs. A closely fought senior boys’ relay was won by St Mary’s Galway in 45.29 secs.
