Ruby Millet of Kilkenny College and Tony O’Connor of Naas CBS won the intermediate titles at the Glo Health Leinster Schools Combined Events Championships in Athlone today.
Missing from the girls’ competition was defending Leinster and Irish champion Kate O’Connor of St Vincent’s Dundalk, who arrived at the venue but did not compete after her back went into spasm.
In her absence, the trio of Millet, Rachel Kelly from Loreto Kilkenny and Emma Cheshire of St Vincent’s Dundalk battled it out for victory.
Millet came out on top with a score of 3428 – the highest of the day. Kelly and Cheshire also racked up scores of over 3000 points, with Kelly on 3017 and Cheshire on 301.6. Just missing out on the magic 3000 mark was Deirdre Murray of St Joseph’s Rochfortbridge with 2977 points.
None of the inter boys got over 3000 points, with O’Connor winning with a total of 2874. Second was Jack Mitchell of Pres Carlow with 2700, while third was Thomas Martin from Cistercian Roscrea.
Winning the senior girls’ title was Eva McPartland of Maynooth PP with a score of 2578, with Racheal Sawyer from Bagnelstown second. Johnnie McKenna of Patrician Newbridge scored 2786 to win the boys’ senior competition from Shane Keane of Blackrock and Simon Zandarco of Carlow VS.
