Kate O’Connor from St Vincent’s Dundalk and Daniel Ryan of CBS Thurles proved the stars of the Glo Health All Ireland Schools Combined Events Championships in Athlone IT with record breaking performances.
O’Connor dominated the junior girls competition with a new Irish record score of 3,865 points. Ryan’s total of 3,785 points in the inter boys’ group was also a new record.
In a classy display, O’Connor clocked 9.42 secs in the 60m hurdles, 11.96m in the shot, 1.70m for the high jump, 5.40m in the long jump and finished it off with a front-running time of 2:17.16 in the 800m. For the silver, Anna McAuley of Methodist Belfast edged out Sophie Meredith of SMI Newcastle West with just eleven points between them; McAuley scored 3,326 points and Meredith 3,315 points.
Just as impressive was Daniel Ryan who clocked up an Irish inter boys record total of 3,785 – 8.15 60m hurdles, 14.84m shot, 6.76m long jump, 23.40 200m and 2:11.46 for 800m. There was another close battle for the silver, with Damien Hickey of Davis College, Mallow taking it with 3,298 points. David Dagg of St Benildus College was third with a personal best 3,218 points (8.79 60m hurdles, 9.95 shot, 5.83 long jump, 23.40 200m, 2:06.00 800m).
St Mary’s CBS Enniscorthy took all three medals in the senior boys’ competition with Tim Bowler the winner on 3,424 points – 8.56 secs 60m hurdles, 11.74m shot put, 6.17m long jump, 23.40 secs 200m and 2:07.76 800m.. Second and third were James Fortune and Peter O’Connor who had scores of 2,792 and 2,643 respectively.
With no Leinster athletes in action, Cara Burke of Methodist Belfast won the senior girls’ title with 2,349 points. Laoise Bennis of Hazelwood College, Limerick was second on 2,067 points and Kathleen Craig from Royal & Prior Raphoe third n 1,663 points.
Closest competition of the day was the inter girls, where Anne Corcoran of Ursuline Waterford scored 3,500 points to beat Vicki Cusack of Davis College, Mallow just fifteen points behind on 3,485 points, with Bronagh Walsh of St Leo’s Carlow third on 3,309 points. Corcoran clocked 9.53 secs for the 60m hurdles, 11.93m shot, 5.06m long jump, 1.64m high jump and 2:30.83 for the 800m.
Almost as close were the junior boys where Brian Lynch of Colaiste an Spioraid Naomh came out on top with 3,154 points – 9.01 60m hurdles, 11.71m shot put, 5.93m long jump, 24.20 200m, 2:10.31 800m. Daragh Minitier of Kilrush CS was second on 3,010 points while Tom Mullan of Holy Cross Strabanewas third with 2,980 points.
