Round-Up: DSD Double at Leinster Cross-Country

IMG_3544Sarah Mulligan and John Eves won the senior titles at the Leinster Cross-Country Championships held on a perfect January day in the Cowpark, Dunboyne. Combined with the race was the Celtic International in U23, U20 and U17 age groups.

The women were first off and Mulligan  soon emerged as leader and then held on to that position for the rest of the race.  Rachael Smyth of St Coca’s was almost a minute behind for second place, with Mary Laverty of North East Runners third. Just two teams finished the race – with Liffey Valley the winners from Tullamore Harriers. Avril Deegan of Ballyroan Abbeyleix won the junior women’s race, with Naas Ac the team winners. In the Celtic International U23 race,  Ireland’s Shona Heaslip beat  Rachel Dunn of Scotland by six seconds.

John Eves also forced the pace early  in the men’s 10km race, but faded  on the final lap to give overall victory to Max McNeill of Scotland who won the Celtic U23 title. His time of 33 mins 54 secs put him seven seconds ahead of Eves.  Second and third in the Leinster Championships were Clonliffe pair  Mark Kenneally  and Michael MacDiarmada.  DSD won the team title with 34 points; just four behind was Clonliffe.
