Leevale multi-eventer Sam Healy won the race of the day at the GloHealth Junior/U23 Championships at the CIT when he beat Matthew Behan of Crusaders to take the junior 110m hurdles title. He finished in 14.11 secs; just one-hundredth of a second ahead of Behan.
A lot more relaxed was the long jump which Healy won with a fine effort of 6.71m.
A tactical junior women’s 800m saw Siofra Cleirigh Buttner of DSD winning in 2:10.46 and holding off the fast -finishing Alanna Lally of GCH. Newry’s Aislinn Crossey was third.
In the junior men’s 800m, UCD’s Karl Griffin overtook Rob Tully of Star of the Sea in the chase for the line to win in 1:53.38. Tully finished in 1:54.04, with Cian McBride of North Sligo third in 1:54.74..
A double winner was Lisburn’s Megan Marrs who ran a 11.82 secs personal best to beat Sarah Kate Lacey of Kilkenny City Harriers in the junior 100m and also won the 100m hurdles in 14.42 secs. Winning the junior women’s 200m in a personal best 24.21 secs was Kilkenny’s Cliona Manning.
With an injured Marcus Lawler sitting it out, the junior men’s 100m title went to Tallaght’s Keith Doherty with a personal best 10.82 secs, while Sligo’s Zak Irwin won the 200m in a wind-assisted time of 21.42 secs.
Phil Healy of Bandon completed an U23 sprint double. She beat Catherine McManus to win the 100m in 11.64 secs. In the 200m, she ran 23.95 secs to beat Sarah Muuray of Fingallians.
Kyle Larkin of Emerald was a clear winner of the junior 3000m steelechase in 9:29.71. An equally clear winner was Nadia Power of Templeogue in the junior girls’ 1500, which she won in 4:34.84.
The junior men’s 1500m turned into a battle between Drogheda school mates Andrew Coscoran of Star of the Sea and Aaron Hanlon of Clonliffe. Coscoran made it by less than a second in 3:53.84; Hanlon was timed at 3:54.68.
Over 5000m, Isabel Carron of Skerries won the junior girls title with a time of 17:42.68, with Raheny’s Maria O’Sullivan first U23 in 17:36.06. Hugh Armstrong of Ballin won the men’s U23 title in 15:04.41
In the throws, the McGuigan brothers made it a hammer double with Fellan taking the junior title throwing 63.49m (6.2kg) and Dempsey winning the U23 title with a throw of 64.47m (7.2kg). Highlight of the jumps was a 2.12m in the junior high jump for Old Abbey’s David Cussen.
JASON HARVEY, running for Liverpool Harriers, ran a season’s best time of 50.79 to win the 400m hurdles at the British Athletics League Premiership in Hendon yesterday. Finished second was Paul Byrne in 51.91 secs. Rory Chesser, in Newham and Essex Beagles colours, won the steeplechases in 9:02.74, and in the B 1500m was second in 3:53.24.
CLAIRE FITZGERALD finished second in the discus with a throw of 51.14m at the British Athletics Women’s Premiership in Eton, just two metres less than her best of 53.01. Only three Irish women have ever thrown over 50m in the discus, with Patricia Walsh’s record of 57.60 dating back 30 years to 1984. Kerry O’Flaherty won the 2000m steeplechase in a personal best 6:34 20, while Caoimhe King won both the long jump with 5.96 and the triple jump with 11.74. Anita Fitzgibbon was third in the javelin with a throw of 44.09m
MICHAEL BOWLER OF KCH finished third at the European Combined Events Cup Second League with a total of 6997 points. Trim’s Shane Aston was 8th with 6449 and Koroush Fouroghi 9th with 6395.
