McCormack runs 70:44 at NY ‘Half’. Masters Indoors Round-Up. Mallow ’10’ abandoned

IMG_9823Fionnuala  McCormack ran a personal best time of 70 mins 44 secs to finish fourth in today’s New York Half Marathon. Race winner was Molly Huddle, who just made it ahead of Joyce  Chepkirui of Kenya; the pair were given the same time of  67.41. Third was Diane Nukuri in 69.41.

LEEVALE’S Colm Sheehan in 14 mins 43 secs and Deirdre Byrne of Sli Cualann in 16 mins 10 secs were the winners of the St Patrick’s Festival 5km in Dublin.  A certain Eamonn Coghlan jogged around the course in 24 mins 8 secs and finished third M60.

Stop press:  Awful news from today’s Mallow ’10’ which was abandoned just before the three-mile mark after a serious traffic accident involving multiple vehicles in which one man died.

GALWAY’S Sean Breathnach was a comfortable winner of the M35 shot putt at the GloHealth Masters Indoor Championships in Athlone, although his single effort ot 16.90m was off his recent best. Breathnach also won the 56lb for distance with a 8.06m effort

In the W35 1500m, Lisburn’s Kelly Neely came home in 4: 20.78, with Denise Toner of Clones second in 4:42.16. Niamh Fitzgerald of Lucan Harriers showed a welcome return to form, winning the W40 800m in 2:16.95 and the 400m in 62.42 secs.

Toner proved was the fastest overall in the 3,000m with a time of 10:27.78. Pauline Curley of Tullamore Harriers was second overall and first W45 in 10:31.66. Curley also won the W45 800m in 2:30.51, with Rathfarnham’s Vanessa Sallier second in 2:36.30.

Race of the day was the M35 9800m, won by Kieran McGrath of Drogheda & District in 2:03.4, with Rathfarnham’s Ronan Kearns a close second in 2:03.28 and Paddy Kelly of Mullinagar Harriers third in 2:03.50. Rathfarnham’s s Paul Fleming with a time of 2:05.56 was first M40; Fleming also won the M40 1500m in 4:20. 97.

Winner of the M35 60m and 200m was Jonathan Carleton of Ballymena and A ntrim Carleton clocked 7.04 secs for the 60m and 23.29 for the 200m.

A large group from Drogheda and Dstric were in action, with Nuala Reilly winning the W60 800m, 1500m and 3000m

Oldest competitor of the day was Hugo Gallagher from Donegal who won the M90 long jump. Nenagh’s Pat Naughton won the M80 shot, high jump and long jump.

On the final day of the juvenile indoors, Swinford’s Michaela Walsh won the W19 shot with a new record of 14.78m, also a B standard for the World Juniors.
