Ciara Everard led UCD to a well-earned victory in the women’s race with a solid 5 mins 2 secs mile at the annual Irish Universities Road Relays, in NUI Maynooth.
UCD had led from the start with a 4 mins 58 secs mile leg by Ellie Hartnett with the battle for second place between Katie Kirk for Queen’s and DCU’s Laura Behan although Trinity’s Irene Gorman and UCC’s Niamh Walsh were not far off the pace. Hartnett was followed by Fiona Roche who maintained the UCD lead, with Deirdre Doyle pulling DCU into second place and Sinead O’Connor for UCC third ahead of Trinity’s Clare McCarthy.
By the second two-mile leg, run by Meghan Ryan in her UCD debut, UCD looked uncatchable. Behind them Orla Drumm had pulled UCC into second place ahead of DCU’s Mary Mulhare and Maria O’Sullivan for Trinity.
UCC, with Ciara Cornin running the final mile, had started to eat into UCD’s lead but had to settle for second place once Everard took over. DCU’s Mary Anne O’Sullivan held on for third, with Trinity, anchored by Sorcha Humphries, fourth. It was a first win in over 19 years for UCD.
In the men’s race, DCU came out on top, with Joe Warne running the glory leg.
UL’s Niall Touhy with a time of 4 mins 14 secs had led on a fast first leg of a mile, followed closely by Darren McBrearty for DCU, UCD’s Karl Griffin, and Liam Brady for Athlone IT. For DCU, John Coghlan then took over in front, battling it out with UCD’s Ruairi Finnegan and Eoin Everard for AIT. On the decisive three mile leg, David McCarthy increased the DCU lead, with John Travers keeping AIT in a solid second place, and Joe Sweeney of UCD holding on for third.
McCarthy then passed on to Darragh Greene who maintained the DCU lead on the second two-mile leg. Darragh Rennicks, running for AIT, kept his team in second place, holding off Richard Owens who had made up some ground for UCD .
It was left to Warne to bring DCU home, with AIT anchored by Vincent Connolly in second place – their best ever position – while Mark English brought UCD home in third place just five seconds adrift.
* At the Irish Life BHAA Combined 6km Cross-Country in Santry, over 200 runners revllled in the perfect conditions, with Thomas Hayes and Fiona Mahon the winners.
* Sarah Collins, whose family hails from Cork, was part of the winning Providence team at the NCAA Cross-Country Championships in Terre Haute. Collins was in third spot after 2km, but faded to finish 38th in the windy and wet conditions. It was a first win for the Providence women since 1995.
