Sunday Round-Up: Britton 7th in France; Meath Awards; Philippines Fund-Raiser

 

Fionnuala Britton has finished seventh and second European at the Cross de l’Acier in Dunkerque, France – her final race before the Europeans.

Britton’s time of 23 mins 3 secs for the 6.6km course put her nine seconds behind Sophie Duarte of France who finished fifth and first European.

Hiwot Ayelew of Ethiopia won the race in 22 mins 30 secs, justing holding off Kenya’s Lineth Masai. Haftamnesh Tesfay of Ethiopia was 15 seconds back for third place, with Lucy Macharia of Kenya and Duarte battling it out for fourth and fifth.

Portlaoise’s Michael Mulhare  finished  11th in the men’s race won by Kenyan athlete Cornelius Kangogo in 28.07.

* A superb total of  over €2,600 was raised by East of Ireland Marathons  in a special race for the Red Cross’s efforts in the Philippines. Inspiration behind the race was athlete Paolo Margelino, originally from the Philippines and part of the large and much-respected Filipino community in Ireland.
