John Travers of Donore Harriers and DSD’s Laura Shaughnessy were comfortable winners at the Charleville International Half Marathon in Co Cork.
Travers, back training for the past five weeks after a bout of illness, was first overall in 67 mins 42 secs, with Cambridge student Jonathan Escalante-Philips over half a minute behind for second in 68.16.
Laura Shaughnessy’s winning time of 73 mins 59 secs puts her second on the Irish rankings for the year behind Fionnuala McCormack who ran 72 mins 35 secs in Barcelona last February.
Gideon Kipsang running for Derry Track Club and Letterkenny’s Caitriona Jennings were the winners at the Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon.
Kipsang was a comfortable overall winner with his time of 64 mins 38 secs seeing him finish well over a minute ahead of early leader Stephen Scullion of Clonliffe Harriers who is training for the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon. Last year’s winner Freddy Sittuk of Raheny Shamrock wwas third. In the women’s race, Caitriona Jennings of Letterkenny AC proved the class of the field winning in a personal best time of 75 mins 38 secs.
Charlie O’Donovan proved the star of the young Leevale team competing at the European Junior Club Championships B group in Leiria, Portugal on Saturday.
O’Donovan, who competed at the European U2o Championships in Grossetto last month, won the 3000m in 8 mins 56 .71secs, beating Martin Pinta of Slovenian club AD Mass Ljubljana, by 14 seconds. Also picking up good points was Matt Murnane second in the 800m.
TRIATHLETE RUSSELL WHITE finished 15th at the World Triathlon Series Grand Final in Rotterdam – his best result of the season.
White completed the 1,500m swim with team mate Ben Shaw in 18mins 55secs and both of them were in touch with the leaders heading out on to the bike, although Shaw was forced to retire soon after. White held his position on the run to hold on to 15th place in a race won by Frane’s new star Vincent Luis.
The top 15 result means White has made the the Commonwealth Games consideration criteria He completes his season next weekend in Spain. In the para events, over the sprint distance, Tojo Larrazi from Co Mayo took a magnificent bronze bronze in the men’s S4 race, posting the quickest run split of the day and the second quickest bike split.
David Kerr was fourth in the open wheelchair race. In the visually impaired open category, a strong cycle and run saw Donnacha McCarthy finishing fourth. Aidan McGlynn finished 11th in the men’s Elite PTS5 event.
Locally, Charles Maltha and Aine Donegan were crowned National Middle Distance Champions after winning the Lost Sheep Triathlon in Kenmare, Co Kerry.Bryan McCrystal and Aichlinn O’Reilly were second and third in the men’s trace, with Olympic rower Sinead Lynch second of the women ahead of Jennifer Duffy.
