Freddy Keron Sittuk of Raheny and Tullamore’s Pauline Curley were the winners of the Longford Marathon. In an exact repeat of last year, Sittuk – although five minutes slower than in 2013 – was first and Gary O’Hanlon of Clonliffe second. On her annual visit to Longford, Curley was beating Angela McCann of Clonmel for a second year. Michelle McGee, who grew up locally, was first woman in the half marathon, with Philip Harty of West Waterford the overall winner.
A DAY AFTER winning the SSE Airtricity Frank Duffy ’10’, Maria McCambridge travelled to Donegal to support the inaugural Donegal Marathon and Half Marathon in Letterkenny, a town where she lived with husband Gary Crossan for some years. In the half marathon, Micheal Black was the winner, with Gary second, while Maria finished sixth overall and first woman. Benny Mullan and Jolene Mellon were the winners of the marathon.
AT THE EUROPEAN MASTERS Track and Field Championships, DSD’s Kevin Byrne took silver in the M40 pole vault and then finished fifth in the decathlon with a new Irish record of 4858 points. Byrne’s best result was a 1.70m high jump and he also picked up good points in the 100m, 400m and hurdles. Geraldine Finnegan of Dunleer took silver in the W45 heptathlon with 4805 points, thanks to strong performances in the hurdles, high jump and 800m , while 79-year-old Dorothy McLennan of Sportsworld also took silver in W75 heptathlon with 1946 points.
AT THE WORLD YOUTH OLYMPICS in Nanjing, China, Swinford’s Michaela Walsh finished 6th in teh shot put with a personal best 15.69. Adam King of Iveragh was 8th in the hammer with 71.49. In the qualification round King threw a personal best 71.91m. Eoin Sheridan of North Westmeath finished 13th overall in the discus throwing 51.19m.
On the track, Lisburn’s Roseanna McGuckian finished thrid in the 200m B final in 25.15 and was 10th overall. Louise Shanahan of Leevale, who had won gold at the 2013 European Youth Olympics, was 6th in the 800m in a personal best 2.08.29.
