Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu continued his preparations for the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon by winning the Galway Bay Half Marathon in a comfortable time of 67 mins 4 secs. SBR’s Tom Hogan was five minutes behind for second. Finishing eighth overall and first woman was Nicola Duncan of GCH, back home from her Scottish base for a break.
Duncan finished in 78 mins 32 secs, despite spending most of the summer on the physio’s bench. Second was Tullamore’s Pauline Curley. Earlier this year, Duncan ran 2:33.28 at the London Marathon but was forced to drop out of the Irish team for the European Championships.
AISLING NIC DHOMHNAILL of Donore and John Frazer of Crusaders were the winners of the Dublin Novice Cross-Country titles at the Phoenix Park. The Celtic DCH women and the Donore men won the team titles. Andrew Coscoran of Star of the Sea and Dunboyne’s Shauna Moran won the Meath Novice titles.
GARY O’HANLON of Clonliffe and Raheny’s Fiona Stack were the winners at the Athlone 3/4 Marathon. Race organiser Barry Minnock just beat North Leitrim’s Liam Feely for second.
BRIAN LEAHY and Annette Kealy made it a Raheny double at the annual Simon Fun Run in Dublin’s Phoenix Park. Lots of schools sent groups – well done St Benildus, the High School Rathgar, Hartstown CS, St Michael’s, Castleknock school, Moyle Park, St Dominic’s, Muckross, Holy Child Killiney, Beneavin DLS, Coolmine CS, Malahide CS, CBC Monkstown, Our Lady of Mercy and Mount Anville.
KEVIN DOONEY of Raheny Shamrock and Yale opened his US college cross-country season with a 7th in 23 mins 55 secs at the Paul Shot Invitational 8km. Kevin Batt, who recently transferred to DSD from St Coca’s, was one place and one second behind. In her first race for Villanova (a 6km cross-country) , Siofra Cleirigh Butter of DSD finished 17th. Former top Slí Cualann juniors, Tara Jameson and Niamh Kearney, both recorded impressive cross-country results. Tara, running for Iona College, finished 6th in the highly competitive Paul Short Run in Bethlehem. Niamh, for Georgia State, finished 3rdat the JSU Foothills Invitational in Oxford, Alabama.
