Round-Up: Rathfarnham 5km Wins for McCarthy, Treacy. Ciobanu wins Cork-to-Cobh

IMG_1759David McCarthy ran a smart race to win the New Ireland Rathfarnham 5km, held in perfect conditions today. With just over 800m to go,  Kevin Maunsell of Clonmel was leading a tightly packed bunch with McCarthy looming ominously on his shoulder. McCarthy made his break with the line in sight and won in a modest time of 14 mins 13 secs. Martin Fagan of Mullingar was eight seconds behind for second, with Conor Dooney  of Raheny passing Donore’s John Travers for third.  First master was Civil Service’s Paul Cowhie, who was also first over 50.

Dunboyne’s Sara Treacy, just off a three week break, won the women’s race in  16 mins 15 secs, with Orla Drumm of Crusaders second.  First master was Raheny’s Annette Kealy. The St Abban’s men and the Dunboyne women took the team prizes.

SERGIU CIOBANU won the Cork to Cobh BHAA 15-Mile by over three minutes. As the Cork Running blog points out, this race MUST be the best value in the country; just €10 with a tech t-shirt and goodies for all. Some of the commercial half marathons are charging up to seven times as much!

MULLINGAR’S Mark Christie won the Blackrock 4-Mile in Co Louth on Saturday, beating Clonliffe’s Gary O’Hanlon.

IN CASE you didn’t notice, Dennis Kimetto ran a new world record of 2:02:57 for the marathon in Berlin today. The previous record of 2:03:23 was set by Wilson Kipsang at last year’s Berlin race. Kimetto has form – he ran 2:03:45  at the 2013 Chicago Marathon.

Both Kimetto and second placed Emmanuel Mutai broke the previous world record, with Mutai keeping with his fellow Kenyan until 35km and finishing in a 2:03:13. The  pair reached the half-marathon in 1:01:45 and 30k in 1:27:37, a world record for that distance.
